Womens Pro Team Prepares to Kick-off 2009 Season in March

FC Gold Pride, Bay Area Franchise of Women’s Professional Soccer, added ten players to its roster today at the final WPS Draft of the inaugural season.  "We’re thrilled to see that Brandi Chastain was selected by FC Gold Pride in today’s 2009 WPS Draft," said WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci.

FC Gold Pride, Bay Area Franchise of Women’s Professional Soccer, added ten players to its roster today at the final WPS Draft of the inaugural season.

The Pride started off the draft by selecting midfielder, Christina DiMartino a senior stand-out at UCLA, in the first round as the third overall pick. The Long Island native recently capped her career with UCLA after helping the Bruins continue their reign as one of the longstanding powerhouses of collegiate soccer. During her tenure she was part of four Pac-10 conference championship teams and also helped the Bruins to four appearances at the NCAA College Cup during her tenure.

Following DiMartino, the Pride added Carrie Dew (Notre Dame), Tiffany Weimer (Penn State), Marisa Abegg (Stanford), Ameera Abdullah (University of Florida), Leigh Ann Robinson (University of San Diego) as the number two through six picks respectively.

FC Gold Pride added women’s soccer icon Brandi Chastain to the roster as the seventh round draft pick. The Bay Area native has served as a trailblazer for women’s soccer as part of the golden decade of the US Women’s National team during the 90’s, one of the most dominant teams the sport has seen to date. She was a member for the 1991 and 1999 Women’s World Cup Championship teams as well as the Olympic teams that brought home gold in 1996 and 2004 and silver in 2000.

"We’re thrilled to see that Brandi Chastain was selected by FC Gold Pride in today’s 2009 WPS Draft," said WPS Commissioner Tonya Antonucci. “Brandi Chastain is a symbol of women’s soccer in this country and her star power, experience and enthusiasm for the game will be a great addition to her team and the league on the whole."

Chastain is best known for elevating the profile of women’s soccer with her game winning penalty kick in the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup that defeated China and ignited an explosive soccer following and increased participation in the sport, plans to continue to infuse fans with her enthusiasm for the game and hopes to contribute to the team on and off the field.

Rounding out the Pride’s draft day selections were Alison Whitworth (Auburn), Alissa Oldenkamp (ASU) and Sunnyvale, CA resident Stacie Alberico (SJSU/California Storm).

Be there as Brandi Chastain returns to Santa Clara to kick off the inaugural WPS season on Sunday, April 5 at Buck Shaw Stadium against the first overall draft pick Amy Rodriguez and the Boston Breakers.
