August 2014 Referee Class - Register Now!
Make Some Extra Money This Summer

SCYSL will be hosting a Grade 8 Referee Licensing Clinic on the below dates during August, 2014 at the Santa Clara Youth Soccer Park.

Step 1) The registration fee is $25 (payable online and refunded after you pass the test and referee five SCYSL games during the Fall season) in class fees, and $45 for USSF registration. This $45 covers your annual registration with the USSF and includes 2014 as well as 2015.  If you do not pass the exam at the end of the class, this amount will be returned to you.

Step 2) Complete the CNRA portion of the referee registration at https://cnra.gameofficials.net/login.cfm?regClassID=9580   you will need to create an account, then register and pay.

Serving as a referee is an excellent way to increase your understanding and appreciation of the game, and we strongly encourage SCYSL players and (especially) parents to sign up for this course.  We would very much like to have as many adults as possible go through this class, because in our experience, having an adult on the referee team is one of the best ways to minimize the likelihood of excessive dissent on the field.  The other way to help minimize this is by having well-trained, game-ready referees, and we are rather unique in requiring our referees to attend field clinics as part of the class and having the new referees’ initial games be mentored by experienced referees.  We first implemented this policy in 2008, and it has proved extremely successful - to the point where our approach is being emulated by other leagues in the Bay Area.

If you want to sign up for this class or have any questions, please contact Matt Heintz at president@scyouthsoccer.org   Please let him know your affiliation with SCYSL.  We will hold registration open only to people with SCYSL or Sporting affiliation until July 1st, after that, we will accept other applicants.

Attendance will be taken at all sessions, and more than one absence is an automatic NO PASS.  In addition to the 6 classes that are set aside for USSF Instructor presentations of the Laws of the Game, you may have noticed in the course description one additional date (8/23).  This is the date of our referee training jamboree where all new referees will be trained during live scrimmages by referee mentors.  We also have our field session between games of the jamboree.  This session will focus on taking the theory from the class and applying it in the real world – out on the field.  The goal of our new training format is to send new referees to their first league games as JOB READY as possible.  Attendance at these additional sessions is mandatory for students wishing to officiate games for SCYSL, but students who do not intend to officiate with us do not have to attend the additional sessions.  Because these sessions are required (for SCYSL referees), I must receive advance notice of any attendance scheduling conflicts as we have a firm policy of ’make-up’ sessions planned for such contingencies.
