SF 49ers Break Promise to Build New Soccer Fields - Soccer Parents Need to Speak-Up

March 23, 2014

Parents,

The Santa Clara City Council is meeting on Tuesday 3/25 at Santa Clara City Hall  1500 Warburton Ave, Santa Clara at 7pm to discuss building additional soccer fields in Santa Clara to offset the fields lost at the Santa Clara Youth Soccer Park on Sundays due to 49er game day congestion.  We are overjoyed that these new fields are being considered, sceptical that they can be completed by early August when they would be needed, and disappointed in the fact that the City is footing the bill for these fields rather than the 49ers (regardless of which fund the City money comes out of).

If you read the letter from Jed York, Owner of the 49ers dated January 10, 2012, it is clear that he promised "to underwrite several regulation-sized additional fields" for use "during NFL game days."  There is no mention of a contingency for underwriting these fields in exchange for being allowed to use the SCYSP parking lot on game days (which the 49ers now claim is the holdup).  If he is to be held to his word, then why is the City (which means footing the bill for these fields?

We would like to ask anyone who has an interest in youth soccer in Santa Clara to attend the meeting and support our hope of swaying the Council's thinking on this matter.  Children in soccer uniforms would send a great message to the City Council that these youngsters are the ones who are actually being displaced on game days, and we want our children to see that authority figures who make promises in order to sway public influence in their favor can't simply renege on these promises once the election is over and they have what they desire.  If you are unable to attend this meeting, you can still show your support be emailing the City Council at Mayorandcouncil@santaclaraca.gov or sending mail to Mayor and Council 1500 Warburton Ave, Santa Clara, CA 95050.
