Santa Clara Sporting ’94 goalie, Lyndsay Mewes and the ’93/’94 Cal-North State ODP Team finished the 2009 Region IV ODP Championship Tournament as SemiFinalists on Sunday, January 19th when they lost a tough game 1-3 to the Colorado State ODP Team. The Cal-North State ODP Team was one of 11 State ODP Teams from the Western Region that converged into Pheonix, Arizona last weekend from January 17th-20th. Cal-North opened-up tournament play on Friday with a 1-1 draw against the Utah State ODP Team, then crushed the New Mexico State ODP Team 6-0 in a late afternoon match.
On the second day of the tournament, they competed in one game and defeated the Nevada State ODP Team 2-0. The team rested Saturday afternoon, then won their Sunday afternoon QuarterFinal game 3-0 over Washington State ODP; the victory gave the team a birth to play in the Semi-Finals. Unfortunately, Cal-North ran out of energy and fell to the Colorado Team 1-3. Colorado won bracket play, and moved-on to play Cal-South (other bracket winners) for the ODP Championship Tuesday morning. Cal-South hammered Colorado 4-0 for an easy win, and will compete in the ODP National Championships in Texas during March.
Lyndsay tried-out for the combined ’94 and ’93 Age Group Team back in November, and was chosen as one of two goalies for the squad. They had three training sessions at Santa Clara University before flying to Pheonix to compete in front of a packed crowd of college coaches. Great job Lyndsay!
